全球暖化加劇，減碳行動刻不容緩，如何進一步節能減碳即成為相當重要的一環，除了專注於減少自身的碳足跡，並幫助上下游企業減少足跡，才有可能成功達成淨零排放的目標。奇美自始以來將環境保護視為優先要務，盡最大努力對環境帶來正面價值，長期投入相關永續技術的發展，加上歐盟於2023年3月祭出更嚴苛的電視能源效率新規，多家知名的全球面板大廠，便積極尋求與奇美攜手一起實現綠色承諾的機會。

奇美特用化學事業總處，最早於2016年即開始進行節能光阻布局及開發，這些節能光阻都是極度客製化之新興產品，要成為領航者必定得在開發設計上需跳脫原有思維，因應各家客戶不同的製程、設備和需求，我們須找出相對應的解決方案。
客戶希望於現行製程中，達到更節能的效果，將烘烤溫度降低是其中一種手法，但開發低溫光阻時，卻遇到耐化性的問題，既有常用的原副料並無針對此特性開發，因此改善效果有限。為了滿足客戶需求，我們勢必要在短時間內開發出不同以往之關鍵材料。奇美在這幾年不斷針對供應鏈的強化進行布局，請各供應商持續提供多種不同結構之材料進行評價，建立了非常多且廣的原副料資料庫。因有此布局，我們能迅速進行內部討論並和供應商交流，重新檢視手上的資料庫，透過原副料物性、化性的篩選，先挑出幾個有潛力的候選名單，因先前就有取得樣品，可馬上進行測試，再藉由後續一系列的改質精進，成功於短時間內創造出屬於奇美的關鍵新型原副料，達到客戶的要求。

面對越加收緊的電視能源效益規定，低耗能面板成為必然趨勢，可提升背光源使用效率之染料型光阻，便是被廣泛應用的節能光阻產品之一。開發染料型光阻時，除了染料本身的光穿透度提升外，染料耐熱性提升一直是個挑戰。在開發初期，我們藉由染料主結構的設計挑選和官能基的改質，得到部分的改善，但尚未達標。為解決此問題，我們跳脫原有思維:「染料要同時兼顧穿透度及耐熱性難度太高，不如耐熱性的部分就交給染料的夥伴—結合劑(binder)幫忙吧!」因此，我們開始設計專門為染料而生的結合劑(binder)提升耐熱性，也在數次的改質、測試中取得優良成果，成功量產染料型節能光阻，協助提升客戶終端面板產品的節能效益。

終端產品減碳，打造彩色光阻綠色價值

With carbon reduction imperative due to the acceleration of global warming, CHIMEI has focused on energy conservation and further minimizing carbon footprints by supporting upstream and downstream partners to achieve net-zero objectives. We have always prioritized environmental protection in striving for improvements through long-term developments in sustainable technologies. With EU enacting stricter TV energy efficiency regulations in March 2023, numerous internationally renowned panel manufacturers have been proactively exploring opportunities to partner with CHIMEI to fulfill their green commitment goals.

In 2016, CHIMEI’s Specialty Chemicals Business Unit started planning and developing energy-saving photoresists as highly customized innovations that must inevitably depart from existing concepts with solutions identified and developed according to the unique processes, equipment, and requirements of each client.
Reduction of baking temperature is one method for increasing manufacturing energy-efficiency, but its effectiveness was hindered as chemical resistance of low-temperature photoresists could not be resolved with common auxiliary raw materials, the replacement of which we had to develop to meet client demands. To this end, we have continuously strengthened our supply chain over the past several years. Suppliers were requested to deliver auxiliary raw materials with different structures to be assessed and recorded in a substantial and comprehensive database, based on the physical and chemical properties from which we then select suitable candidates after internal discussions and communicating with suppliers. We implemented sample tests for subsequent modifications in due time to successfully create our own key auxiliary raw materials to meet client’s needs.


Acquire key material technologies to effectively minimize manufacturing energy consumption

As television energy efficiency regulations become stringent, the adoption of low-power-consumption panels is inevitable, of which dye photoresists that improve backlight efficiency are among the most common energy-saving products. However, enhancement of their heat resistance and transmittance has proven to be a challenge in reaching desired standards despite progress with primary structure selection as well as modification of functional groups. To resolve this issue, we diverged from the initial design “due to the high difficulty for a dye to accommodate both transmittance and heat resistance, let us leave the latter feature to the binder instead!” We then constructed a binder to enhance heat resistance followed with modifications and tests, which achieving outstanding results that had dye-based photoresists entered mass production for clients to enhance the energy efficiency of their panel products.

Reduce carbon emissions in end products and create green value for color photoresists

CHIMEI’s energy-efficient photoresists have resulted in 10 to 100 % energy savings for various manufacturing processes with up to 10 % in end products of clients. As part of our efforts to reduce carbon emissions and increase technical handprint, we will continue to strengthen our new photoresist technologies, promote them to global clients, collaborate with suppliers on developing raw materials with biomass and energy-saving processes, and co-create a positive cycle to infinitely magnified the impact of carbon reduction to accomplish our net-zero objectives.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about lifestyle changes such as working from home and remote learning, which accelerated digitalization and fueled the end-user demand for consumer electronics, thereby generating a continuous flow of business opportunities. At the same time, the rapid development of applications in 5G, IoT, AI, electric vehicles, and AR/VR has also driven up the demand for semiconductors, resulting in a shortage of computer chips that overloaded the production capacity of semiconductor assembly and test service providers. Thus, a global leading semiconductor assembly and test company came to CHIMEI at the end of 2020 with a difficult challenge—to come up with a new material solution that can help the company overcome its limit in production capacity.


CHIMEI has accumulated over 20 years of experience in the area of specialty chemicals for the display panel industry and has long focused on the development of photoresist materials and the optimization of manufacturing processes. For our first foray into semiconductor assembly, we were bound by a tight schedule and needed to achieve better performance than the current source without changing the client’s original manufacturing process parameters. Our first measure was to widen the process window as much as possible and raise the products’ tolerance limit so that the products match the client’s manufacturing equipment and parameters, so as to ensure that the material provided by CHIMEI can meet the client’s various test criteria.
Naturally, our goal went beyond meeting the criteria for the existing products but to also achieve the client’s target of improved production capacity. This is where our expertise and experience in photoresist products for display panels become the key to success. Higher photosensitivity in photoresists can help overcome the bottleneck of the photolithography process in costly steppers, thus improving production speed. The higher the photosensitivity, the shorter the required exposure time is, which means a larger production capacity. As sensitivity is the most demanding factor in the performance of photoresist materials used for the production of display panels, CHIMEI has mastered the knowledge and skills in making adjustments to photoresist formulas for improved sensitivity. An analysis of the development history of thin-film photoresists showed that the thick-film photoresists used in semiconductor assembly have similar formulas and structures, allowing us to implement optimization by making changes to the materials used and how they are assessed. Owing to our core competency in photoresist production acquired over the years, we successfully developed a photoresist material for semiconductor assembly that achieved better performance in both sensitivity and resolution, thus helping the client boost their production capacity.

CHIMEI successfully developed and began manufacturing a material that meet the client’s needs in a short time, while also passing various certification tests and inspections to become their new supplier. Not only did we help the client improve their production capacity, the high resolution of our products further allows our client to stay ahead of competitions as they face the growing trend of shrinking chip size and gate width.
This success is a testament to the advantage held by local supply chains. We provide the client with customized products and localized services, and work with them to quickly develop the corresponding solutions. This also allows for flexible adjustment of production capacity, lowers costs and time spent on development and communication, and reduces the carbon emissions generated by the supply chain. The process window is a set of allowed ranges for manufacturing process parameters that can achieve the required specifications in the final results even when different parameters are used during the manufacturing process. 此外，新型PC樹脂的熔融指數提高至每十分鐘45 g。此特性有望帶來雙重優勢，能在實際射出成型過程中達到填飽模穴以及提高生產效率。 
      
而為應對人類共同面對的環境問題，奇美也致力於提高新材料的可回收性，讓未使用的殘料可重複利用而無須丟棄。如此一來，將有利於降低所需使用的材料總量及減少不必要的浪費。

After identifying the emerging trend of thinner keyboards in the laptop market, we took the initiative to develop new materials that would cater to the market’s changing expectations. Our observation was validated in 2016 when Lite-On approached us with a request for a new material that would allow for thinner key caps, while still maintaining toughness and rigidity. Despite the challenging nature of the endeavor, we were confident that our head start, coupled with the advantage of working alongside our partner, would yield the desired new material specifications.


We undertook a systematic process of simulation, reliability, and environmental tests to identify the right balance of properties in a new grade of PC resin. All potential issues and problems that could potentially arise amid real-life use were identified via extensive mold flow analysis and simulation tests.

This systematic process produced favorable results, and we achieved an R&D breakthrough. We reduced the thinness of the laptop keyboard key caps considerably compared to previous standards, to less than 0.55 mm, all while maintaining the impact strength, rigidity, and toughness required for constant daily use.

In addition, the melt flow index of this new PC resin increased greatly to 45g/10 min. The advantages were two-fold as this translates into greater production efficiency and optimizes the injection molding process, maximizing the filling of mold cavities. Also, we upgraded the new material’s recyclability. Unused mold offcuts can now be re-used without being discarded. This reduces the overall amount of material required, avoids waste, and creates a cost-saving boon.


Systematic Testing For Optimal Applicability

“The new PC resin was exactly what we needed for making thinner, durable keyboards,” says CH Tsai, senior material development manager at Lite-On. “Reducing operating costs and increasing production efficiency compared to previous materials just further added the appeal.”

Our new PC resin has become the new standard for the industry, as most major manufacturers, including Lite-On, now use PC-145K for their laptop keyboards. Despite the keycaps becoming thinner, durability has not been sacrificed, creating a better end-user experience and hot sales of super-lightweight laptops.

在需求暴增且供應鏈告急的情況下，奇美成功支援醫療器材廠商度過危機

以靈活的運作方式協助廠商應對疫情需求

2020上半年全球都籠罩在新冠疫情的陰影之下，各國的醫療體系和政府因此承受了極大的壓力，而許多醫療器材廠商收到的救命器材需求量更因此而急速竄升。除了瞬間爆量的訂單外，供應鏈和物流方面的情況也因封城措施而出現顯著變化，使得這些廠商深陷一場難解的風暴中。今年四月，奇美的收件匣塞滿了緊急訂單，內容都是要求訂購大量的POLYLAC ABS（acrylonitrile butadiene styrene）阻燃樹脂。然而，過於分散的訂單讓負責人員無法立即確認實際的需求來源，也因此增添了不少障礙。

由於時間緊迫，來自不透明供應鏈各環節的供應商紛紛直接向奇美下訂單。事實上，奇美主要是透過值得信賴的經銷商所構成的全球網路，為世界各地的客戶提供服務。一般而言，使用奇美原料的品牌主並不會直接與我們對話，而這次的案例原先也是如此。然而，由於情況緊急、全球供應鏈也無法正常運作而暫時癱瘓，因此奇美便毅然決然地扛下重責大任，試圖克服執行層面上的種種挑戰，並加快整體流程。

透過進一步的追查，奇美發現這些緊急訂單的源頭皆來自一間全球頂尖的醫療器材製造商。該企業收到來自多國政府的訂單，須在兩個月內完成兩萬台呼吸器的不可能任務。於是，奇美在短時間內迅速與供應鏈的各廠商建立直接聯繫，包含經銷商、採購商、射出成型工廠、組裝廠，以及橫跨美國、亞洲和歐洲的物流公司等等。如此一來，便能協調各方迅速採取行動，進而滿足急遽增加的救生器材需求。奇美實業一般塑料事業部經理林偉民表示：「發現這次的需求來源是攸關性命的呼吸器後，我們便決定要採取應對措施，並成為協調各方的中間人。與此同時，奇美的各個部門也齊聚一堂，合力實現這項不可能的任務。」

作為特殊規格ABS PA-765/765A樹脂的獨家供應商，奇美以滿足訂單需求作為當前的首要目標，甚至另外清出一整條生產線，以優先製造POLYLAC ABS樹脂。事實上，這條生產線的所有產能原先已安排生產其他級別的ABS樹脂，這意味著奇美必須在爆滿的排程中空下三至四日的作業時間。此外，奇美現有的POLYLAC ABS PA-765/765A庫存也已直接分配給該廠商。這間呼吸器製造商通常會透過奇美的不同經銷商下訂單，一年約訂購兩噸的POLYLAC系列材料。然而，對方捎來的第一筆直接訂單不僅需求量高達15噸，並且需在極短的時間內完成交付。到今年夏天為止，該客戶的兩筆訂單已累積了50噸的需求量。

而此時的物流業正面臨著分崩離析的情勢，對整個局面也構成了一大挑戰。許多航空公司因鎖國防疫政策而停飛，不僅使得航運艙位一位難求，運費也飆漲至三倍以上。而客戶的供應鏈中各成員的分工不明、責任歸屬不清，難以從中找出負責統籌的領導者。林偉民表示：「我們知道必須加快腳步才能拯救生命，因此才決定負責統籌一切事務。為確保進展順利，公司甚至自行吸收了50%的運費，而最後也確實讓決策流程加快了不少。」

支援、供應與運輸的全面加速

奇美很快便適應了不斷變化的情境，成功在一週內製造出第一批重達15噸的POLYLAC ABS樹脂材料，隨後僅用了一週的時間，便順利將原料從奇美的台灣廠區運至客戶在歐洲的射出成型廠。儘管在運作和物流方面都處於不利的困境下，奇美依然成功縮短了整體作業時間，讓客戶能夠及時支援政府和醫療體系的緊急照護服務。

為了讓整個供應鏈運作順暢，奇美致力於提供長期且穩定的材料供應與相關支援，在客戶遭遇困難時更是如此。林偉民說道：「台灣有句話叫做『雨天不收傘』，此時我們與客戶之間並沒有合約或權利義務關係，但作為一個優秀且可靠的供應商，奇美總是盡力讓事情順利進展，讓所有人都能因此受益。這也是我們確保雙方的業務都能持續運作的秘訣。」
